Why can’t I get my grout white again?

Why can’t I get my grout white again?

New grout is as satisfying as new car smell. Like new car smell, white grout never lasts.

If you are asking, “Why can’t I get my grout white again,” you have come to the right place. Grout that was once bright white can quickly dull to shades of brown or gray. This is especially true for grout on high-traffic floors and inside bathtubs and showers. Unlike many surfaces throughout your home, grout is not easily rejuvenated. Even tile itself is easier to maintain than white grout.

Things that prevent you from getting your grout white again.

Cleaning and maintaining your grout is an easy thing to get wrong. It’s why The Grout Medic was formed in the first place. Where before home and business owners were left to their own devices to care for their grout and tile, now is a network of professionals, who specializes in it. Here are two things that are making your grout appear dirty and discolored.

Inadequate Cleaning Solutions

The first thing that keeps you from getting your grout white is the cleaner that you use. While bleach and ammonia might work for simple spot staining, they are not adequate for regular grout cleaning. These harsh cleaning chemicals seep into the pores of your grout, where they become magnets for future debris and dirt particles.

Improper Cleaning Methods

The second thing that prevents you from getting your grout white again is the manner by which you clean it. If you are using scrub brushes, even a toothbrush, you are forcing existing dirt particles beneath the surface of your grout, where they remain deeply embedded.

Here’s what will get your grout white again!

Can you use caulk instead of grout on tile?

Can you use caulk instead of grout on tile?

Many a do-it-yourself query has come to The Grout Medic of San Diego Metro.

Can you use caulk instead of grout on your tiled surface? The long and short of it is…not usually. However, to expound upon the topic, we must explore what grout and caulk are, and what purpose each material serves.

Grout vs. Caulk

Grout and caulk perform similar duties in our tiled surfaces. Both are to finish the aesthetic and seal off the structure behind the tile in order to protect it from water penetration. Grout is used to form cohesion between tiles on one surface and to protect tile edges from cracking or chipping. It is not to be used on the face of tiles, but between tile edges. Grout is much like cement in texture, as it is a mixture of water and sand. It comes in three varieties: sanded, unsanded, and epoxy. Most tiled surfaces have sanded or unsanded grout, both of which are porous and will require sealing to embolden water-tightness. Epoxy grout is inherently watertight after installation. It will not require sealing.

Caulk is used to seal cracks in between tiles or surfaces that exist on different planes. For instance, you can find caulk at the joint where the top (or bottom) of the bathtub meets the tile wall (or floor). You might also find caulk in shower corners, where two walls of tile meet. However, corners might also be finished with epoxy grout, which makes caulk and epoxy grout interchangeable in some instances. The biggest difference in the two materials is that caulk will remain more pliable.

What happens when grout or caulk need replacing?

The main quandary about tiled surfaces is that different materials often age at different rates. In most cases, tile will outlive grout. In many instances, grout will outlast caulk. The Grout Medic company was formed to address common grout and tile issues. Our core services, like grout cleaning and sealing, will help address the issue of aging materials used throughout tiled areas. Enlisting The Grout Medic of San Diego Metro to care for your grout and tile from the start is the first step in helping keep the entire surface of your tile healthier longer. However, we can always be there from the start. For this reason, we offer a variety of repair services to rejuvenate tiled areas in homes and businesses. If your grout is looking old, or chipping away from your tile, we offer professional regrouting, whereby all your old grout is removed and replaced with a new grout mixture. We also offer recaulking to rid your tiled surface of shrinking, bedraggled caulk, replacing it all new to reinvigorate your baths and showers – and re-fortify them against moisture seepage.
