Grout Sealing is Important to Your Tile’s Health and Appearance

In Grout, Grout Sealing is Important to Tile Health and Appearance

Even if you have multiple areas of tile throughout your home, grout is probably not something you give much consideration.

But you should.  Fact is, healthy grout equates to healthy tile.  Healthy tile equates to a healthy home.  How can unsealed grout disparage the overall appearance and health of your tile, though?

Grout sealing is important to you tile's health and appearance.

Grout sealing is important to you tile’s health and appearance.

Grout is much like cement, much like a sponge.

Even though grout is not soft like a sponge, it is porous like one.  Grout is much like concrete and if you think of concrete you might imagine the tiny holes on the surface, barely visible to the eye in some cases.  If you were to give your grout a good going-over, you would see the same surface appearance.  Imagine your sidewalk, and how you might have had to have it pressure washed in the past due to staining.  This is typical upkeep, because dirt and debris tend to embed themselves deep into the pores of your concrete surfaces.  The same thing happens to unsealed grout.  In our showers, moisture will set on the surface.  It will grab onto soap, dirt, and even skin cells and allow them to embed into your grout’s pores.  Additionally, this moisture can start an even more insidious process – mold growth.  Every bit of moisture and contamination that is allowed to come in contact with your grout – over and over again – will not only make your grout look poorly, but become unhealthy overall if unsealed.  Aside from setting up mildew and mold growth, your unsealed grout could begin to erode and fail.  This process could result in catastrophic failure of your tile, causing extreme water damage behind the wall or floor of your shower.

Grout Sealing Protects Your Tiled Surface

Grout can harbor mold and mildew deep inside its pores.

Grout sealing is your grout’s first line of defense.
